What you can do.

Step 1: Confirm the Infestation

Check for Damage: Look for tiny holes in grain kernels or fine dust-like material at the bottom of your silo.

Treatment Option 1: Green Solution

For eco-friendly pest management:

Heat Treatment:

Increase the temperature in your silo to at least 55°C (131°F) for several hours.

Diatomaceous Earth:

Use this natural, food-safe powder to dehydrate and kill the insects. Apply it to surfaces where the weevils are present.

Biological Control: Introduce parasitic wasps that target granary weevils.

Treatment Option 2: Chemical Pesticides

For faster control:

Commonly Used Pesticides:

Phosphine fumigation (e.g., aluminum phosphide pellets)

Synthetic pyrethroids (e.g., deltamethrin)

Always follow safety guidelines and consult with a licensed professional to ensure proper application.

Step 3: Prevent Future Infestations

Seal Entry Points

Inspect silos for cracks, gaps, or damaged seals, particularly around the base and roof.

Use pest-proof mesh screens over vents and other openings.

Monitor Regularly

Install pest monitoring devices, such as automated sensors or pheromone traps, to detect activity early.
